Billing for isotope when a patient no shows

Good morning all!!

I was wondering when we have a patient that doesn't show up for their scheduled stress test, can we bill the patient for the isotope? We end up losing the isotope we ordered because it degraded and is not suitable for use when a patient doesn't show up. Also, do you know where I can find something in writing (maybe a Medicare article) that states if I can or can not bill the patient? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Denise,

We run a nuclear stress lab and many times we have had to eat the cost of the isotope due to no shows.  I know that CMS has a modifier you can use when you don't use all of a particular drug and it goes to waste, but that did not fit this issue.  We began to notify all of our patient by phone and posted it in writing on the wall that if they were a no show, they would end up owing the cost of the isotope and a fee for the appointment that we wasted and we stuck to it.  We found that we rarely have anyone no show now.
